Magnitude-7.6 quake shakes Caribbean, tsunami advisory issued: US monitors

WASHINGTON: A magnitude-7.6 quake rattled the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening about 130 miles (209 kilometers) off the coast of the Cayman Islands, setting off tsunami warnings, US monitoring agencies said.

“Hazardous tsunami waves” set off by the quake were possible within 620 miles of the epicenter along the coasts of the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The temblor struck at a shallow depth, the US Geological Survey said.
